We built MiniRepublic completely in the brand new Open Source e-commerce system Magento, and the implementation was featured on the Magento blog. It required quite a bit of hacking to the templates. I started with the blank theme, but had to adjust quite a few template files in order to present everything as it is right now. The default image resizer was replaced for a lightbox. Since we had lots of custom photography work of our products, we created some batch actions in order to resize them through Photoshop, which gave much better quality than the standard Magento resizing algorithms. The design relies heavily on the excellent Sauna font from Underwear, and while the initial implementation was based on sIFR, I replaced it later on with Cufon, which is much quicker, easier to setup, and could reliably be used to replace the fonts in the dropdown menu.

The new Grasscity website is completely built in the enterprise e-commerce webshop Intershop. I created HTML wireframes with the design and functionality for the Intershop implementation. A large amount of work went into designing the navigation. Due to the enormous size of their catalogue, I created a concept based on hiërarchical selection lists, (like the Mac OS Finder column view), combined with tabbed navigation. This makes it possible to browse fast and easily through their products. Unfortunately, this feature was scrapped due to technical difficulties.

Another partnership with Henk Baetsen is the new Spereco website. Henk provided the design, while I did the Drupal implementation and theming. Since Spereco has a fairly extensive product catalog, we decided to use the taxonomy module for organizing all products in various facets. The taxonomy_menu module is used to provide a fly-out menu of the main product categories, while product qualities are searchable through the use of the taxonomy browser module. We also made heavy use of the image module for photo management.
I even created a Drupal module specifically for this website, which is quite a feat for a non-programmer such as myself.

For the publication of the master thesis, C-MD requires each student to submit an abstract and an suitable image. I created this montage in Photoshop with pictures from Ed White’s space walk, the Hubble telescope, an old sundial and the moon. After some experimentation, I settled on this composition, which depicts the astrounat latching out his sundial. Visually, it communicates both the old (sundial) and new (space), and connotates the sense of exploration and endless possibilities. Navigation and exploration are two closely linked concepts which are at the foundation of this image, and are also the basis of my thesis.

Voor de module Experimental Media moesten we een project maken waarin we experimenteren met media met als onderwerp journalistiek en tuinkabouters in Genk. We hebben een concept ontwikkeld waarmee mensen via hun mobiel routes kunnen aflopen in de stad waar tuinkabouters te vinden zijn. Bij sommige van deze ‘kabouterspots’ zijn ludieke opdrachten uit te voeren. Mensen kunnen zelf foto’s en video’s maken van hun uitwerking of rapportage hiervan en deze insturen. Bovendien kunnen mensen ook zelf ludieke opdrachten verzinnen en insturen. Deze worden allemaal verzameld en gepubliceerd, waarna mensen deze kunnen beoordelen. Het doel is dat er een levendige gemeenschap ontstaat van actieve kabouterspotters, mensen die een incidentele rapportage maken, en bezoekers die de stad willen ontdekken. Vanwege de geografische afhankelijkheid van dit concept is de belangrijkste interface de kaart.

Voor de module Creative Design heb ik ervoor gekozen om een website van de nederlandse politie te herconceptualiseren. Deze website, http://politieonderzoeken.nl/, is bedoeld om de politie te helpen bij openstaande onderzoeken. Ik vond het design oppervlakkig, koud en niet engagerend. Mijn aanpak probeert meer sympathie voor het slachtoffer te creëren, het publiek actief te engageren bij het onderzoek, en het meer toegankelijk te maken door gebruik te maken van HTML, CSS en Javascript.

When my parents moved to a new house in April 2006, they had a lot of construction work to do. Based on this, I created a photo collage which they used as moving card to notify everyone of their new address.

For both the practical and theoretical master thesis of a friend I designed these book covers. At the time, I followed a Photoshop course, so I could put my newly learned skills to good use. I think they nicely convey the title, “creative coping with emotions”, where the creativity is expressed by music, dance, art and theater.
